Social Media Course Worthy Master Degree?
April 3rd, 2009Guardian newspaper reported in 30 March 2009 that Birmingham City University is offering a masters degree in social networking that covering Twitter and other social networking websites. “Students on the £4,000 (approx. $6,000 U.S.) one-year Social Media degree, will explore how we communicate on the websites and how they can be used for marketing.”
Other modules on the course will teach students how to start a blog and podcasting techniques. The course is being advertised through a video on the university’s website.
The course convenor, Jon Hickman, who is posting regularly today on his Twitter feed, responded to media coverage of the course, saying it was not for “IT geeks”.
“The tools learned on this course will be accessible to many people,” he said. “It will definitely appeal to students looking to go into professions including journalism and PR.”
Well, there are some argument going on, those who are in favor of such Social Media Course acclaim that this is innovative and compare Social Media Course to Internet and Computer Science 5-10 years ago, and they believe this will be highly relevant for students who later want to do journalism, PR and marketing; those who disagree totally critisize that this is wasting money and time for such skills that can be self-taught, however it can not be qualified to be a Master’s degree course.
I agree with one idea that Social Media skills can be integrated into other master degree course to teach students how to use social media as tool, and these skills can be big advantages for students later enter into certain professional field. While, it is not worthy to spend one year time and £4,000 to attain a master degree, however, computer skills, online communication skills, social networking skills should be essential skills for young generation because they are so used to use computer and internet.
However, it is interesting to see how this course will go on in Birmingham City University and how students can benefit from learning social media skills.
